July will bring 22,500 tourists to Alicante aboard seven cruise ships
The first liner arrived at Alicante port this week with predominantly British passengers aboard
Cruise season in Alicante looks set to get off to a booming start with around 22,500 tourists expected to disembark seven liners in July alone.
The first cruise ship, MSC Virtuosa, arrived in Alicante port on Thursday July 6 with most of the 6,000 passengers aboard having come from the UK. They are expected to boost the local economy by around 500,000 euros.
Next to dock will be the MSC Orchestra on July 8, 18 and 28. The MSC Virtuosa wll return on July 20, and the Seven Seas and Arcadia will disembark on July 24.
Cruise tourism has skyrocketed in Alicante since MSC chose it as its base port last July, establishing the city as a strategic point for its Mediterranean cruises.
And with the imminent arrival of tens of thousands of tourists, the head of Alicante City&Beach Tourism Board, Ana Poquet, met with the board of directors of the Alicante Costa Blanca Association for Cruise Tourism this week to ensure "the stopovers take place in the best conditions".
Poquet assured the tourist board is keen to "collaborate with the association to continue improving cruise tourism in the city".
There are concerns that the arrival of the Virtuosa coincides with major urban transformation works being carried out along Alicante coastline, which have forced traffic cuts on the busy Mártires de la Libertad avenue.
To try to avoid inconvenience to disembarking tourists, Alicante tourism, traffic and security representatives have requested that a bus lane be reinstated in Juan Bautista Lafora to enable passengers to enjoy excursions.
They have also asked for the shuttle service to the emblematic Santa Barbara Castle to be reinforced and police presence before and during the arrival and departure of the Virtuosa cruise ship.
