ARCHIVED - Irish runner killed while out jogging in Spain
The Wicklow man was hit by a car while running in Madrid

The Irish running community has been left shocked and saddened by the sudden death of one of their own, Austria-born Thomas Bubendorfer, who has been living in Bray, County Wicklow, with his wife Niamh and their four children for many years.
The young father, who is very well-known in running circles throughout Ireland, was struck by a car and killed while out for a jog in Madrid last week.
Thomas’s heartbroken wife confirmed the tragic news on social media on Sunday August 11:
“I don’t usually post personal stuff on here but last Tuesday my life was forever changed.
“My darling husband Thomas Bubendorfer was killed, hit by a car while out for a run in Madrid.
“We were married 25 years with 4 children and still so much in love. There are no words.”
She later said that the entire family is “absolutely devastated and utterly bereft without him.”
Before his untimely death Thomas worked as a computer programmer and ran a blog, ‘Rubbishrunner’, on the side. The runner’s last post was uploaded on August 19, when he described a recent family trip to Crete, “our first family holiday in 3 years, the same place Niamh and me had been to for our first anniversary, many, many years ago,” he wrote.
Tributes have been pouring in since the popular runner’s death was made known, with fellow blogger ‘Cork Running’ praising Thomas’s illustrious career in Munster, where he “was a very active pacer for many marathons” and “represented his native Austria several times” as an ultra-endurance runner.
“I was shocked to hear this morning about the recent passing of Thomas Bubendorfer after an accident in Spain,” he wrote.
