Investigation launched into death of Irish couple in Orihuela Costa house
Neighbours alerted police when unusual smells started coming from the Vega Baja property

The Guardia Civil has opened an investigation into the deaths of an Irish couple whose bodies were discovered inside a property on a tourist residential development in Orihuela Costa.
Neighbours raised the alarm at around 10.15am after several days without seeing any activity at the home and noticing unusual smells and other signs around the property. Orihuela Local Police were first to arrive and found the front door slightly ajar.
Inside, officers discovered the body of a man with a head injury who, according to the initial forensic assessment, is believed to have died around a week earlier. A woman was found nearby with injuries to her torso and limbs; although she still showed vital signs when emergency services arrived, she reportedly died shortly afterwards.
Their ages have not yet been released.
Both were found partially undressed in one of the rooms, according to the same sources. Officers also found food and drink remnants in the property.
The house is located on Calle Escorpiones, a long and busy road that marks the boundary between the southern edge of Torrevieja and the northern stretch of the Orihuela coastline, close to Punta Prima.
Gender-based violence has been ruled out at this stage. The Guardia Civil’s Judicial Police unit in Torre de la Horadada is now leading the investigation and have confirmed that no firearms or bladed weapons were found at the scene. Robbery is also not currently suspected.
Early indications suggest that the man may have died of natural causes and that the woman, due to her own limitations, was unable to seek help, although other lines of inquiry remain open.
The development where the couple lived forms part of the wider Orihuela Costa urban area, home to more than 30,000 year-round residents and a significant seasonal population. The area has a large international community, including a notable Irish presence, with almost 700 registered Irish residents in Orihuela Costa and around 400 in Torrevieja.
