ARCHIVED - Interest in Alicante-Elche Airport on the Costa Blanca soars as Spain relaxes travel restrictions
Thirty-seven airlines want to fly to the Costa Blanca airport in the Alicante province in the Valencia Region from 131 airports worldwide.
As confidence in international travel grows, 37 airlines want to capitalise on the ideally located Alicante-Elche this summer given its proximity to popular destinations such as Benidorm, Alicante city and Torrevieja.
During a speech at FITFUR international tourism trade fair in Madrid today, Friday, May 21, the airport director Laura Navarro said there has been a significant surge in interest from airlines as international restrictions are relaxed.
She outlined the Alicante airport's connectivity strategy in the short term and said "this interest will help recover summer activity at the airport in part to pre-pandemic levels".
Alicante-Elche Airport has received the ASQ 2020 accreditation for the implementation of the best hygiene measures at its facilities, a distinction Navarro says has helped restore confidence.
The priority now is to "establish the connectivity of the province with different destinations and activate air routes to new tourist source markets".
To achieve this, Navarro stressed the importance of the fair "to address possible relationships with new airlines".
And news announced today that Spain has removed essential travel only restrictions for visitors from the UK from May 24, along with plans to allow entry to vaccinated travellers from EU countries from June 7 can only be a significant move in the right direction to reactivate the tourism industry.
And in a further bid to give the travel sector a much-needed boost, the EU has approved the digital Covid Certificate scheme which will take effect from July 1.
