Injured British climber rescued from Malaga cliff face
The 20-year-old Briton had to be airlifted from the El Chorro mountain in Malaga
A heart-stopping rescue operation unfolded in El Chorro, Malaga on Monday November 11, as members of the Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (Greim) of the Guardia Civil sprang into action to save a young British climber who had suffered a terrifying fall while tackling the infamous Blue Line route.
The 20-year-old adventurer was left dangling from safety ropes at a dizzying height of 200 metres, unable to descend on his own after hitting an outcrop and injuring his leg.
His companion, who made the emergency call to 112-Andalucía at 12.50pm, reported that the young man had fallen in the Suiza area, specifically on the notorious Arab Staircase.
The fire brigade, 061 health services and Guardia Civil were all mobilised, with a Greim helicopter dispatched to the scene to attempt a rescue in very challenging terrain.
The rescue was a complex and delicate procedure, requiring the use of a crane cycle to lower equipment to reach the stranded climber.
Despite the difficulties, the Greim team persevered and the young climber was finally carried to safety and evacuated to the helipad of the Hospital Clínico de Málaga.
