ARCHIVED - Infections halved in a day: Spain Covid update February 23
The incidence rate in Spain has dropped by 3,000 points in a month

Back in December, the emergence of the Omicron variant caused an explosion of Covid infections across Spain, prompting many autonomous communities to implement restrictions before the holidays and the central government to make mask-wearing mandatory outdoors once again.
At the height of the sixth wave, the cumulative incidence rate reached an astonishing 3,866 cases per 100,000 inhabitants but in a few short weeks, the country has emerged at the other end of the coronavirus tunnel; on January 21, the incidence finally began dropping at the fastest rate of the entire pandemic and it hasn’t stopped. Since then, this vital indicator has fallen more than 3,000 points.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health notified 22,194 new Covid infections on Tuesday February 22, a significant drop compared to the previous day, when 48,000 cases were reported. The figure is also considerably lower than the 34,380 positives registered on the same day last week.
It’s important to note, however, that Catalonia has not submitted infection figures for today’s report, and so the figures are likely to be somewhat higher.
In the past two weeks, 348,369 people have tested positive for coronavirus across Spain, bringing the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 10,880,194.
Meanwhile, the positivity rate stands at 20.39 percent, down from 21.32 percent yesterday.
Cumulative incidence rate
One of the best indicators of how the pandemic is progressing, the 14-day cumulative incidence rate has dropped another 52 points overnight to stand at 735 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on February 22.
Galicia is still the autonomous community with the highest incidence rate, at 1,194 cases, and is now the only community with a rate above one thousand. The Community of Valencia has registered a significant decrease in recent days and now stands at 922 infections per 100,000 inhabitants.
The data continues to drop in the other regions also, with the north African enclave of Melilla leading the way down with 392 cases followed closely by Andalucía, with 419.

Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 8,859 patients hospitalised for Covid in Spain (down from 9,364 on Monday) while 1,185 people are being treated in the country’s ICUs (down from 1,224).
In the last 24 hours, there have been 747 admissions and the number of people who have recovered and been discharged has taken a huge jump from 573 to 1,268 in just 24 hours.
With these figures, the number of hospital beds occupied by Covid patients has dropped from 7.56% to 7.13% while ICU occupancy has gone from 13.20% to 12.77%.
A further 173 Covid-related deaths have been reported on Tuesday, another significant drop compared to the previous day when 464 fatalities were registered.
Over the last seven days, 525 deaths have been notified. Andalucía has the dubious top spot, with 79 fatalities, followed by Aragon with 56.
In total, 98,635 deaths from Covid have been registered in Spain since the health crisis began.
Vaccination data
As of February 22, a total of 38,395,425 people over the age of 12, representing 91% of the population, have been double jabbed, while 92.8% (39,155,208 people) have received their first vaccine.
