How to get a couple of extra points back on your Spanish driving licence
A series of courses aim to update drivers' knowledge and educate them on road traffic changes
Although it is an old promise that the DGT has been dragging on since the last update of the General Regulations for Drivers of 2022, it seems that finally the courses for safe and efficient driving in Spain are becoming a reality.
The courses aim to update drivers' knowledge and to educate them on road traffic changes, such as new forms of mobility or electrification. During the course, such topics as the use of computer technology in cars, driving aids and economical driving techniques will be discussed.
Just a week ago, Pere Navarro, the director general of traffic, insisted on the development of these courses as one of the key measures to reduce accidents and road deaths.
Three years ago, when these courses were first discussed, the DGT initially launched them only for motorcyclists, although they were later extended to car drivers.
Beyond the training itself, it was understood that drivers who took the test, and passed, would receive up to two extra points on their driving licence.
In Spain, instead of having points put on your licence for infractions, you start with 12 points and these are taken away for bad behaviour.
The lesson therefore became highly sought-after, as drivers who do not have too many points on their driving licence were looking to gain two back.
In any case, the details of these courses are still unknown.
