ARCHIVED - Hospital pressure on the rise in Valencia: Covid update December 30
Coronavirus infections in Valencia have doubled in two weeks
The Community of Valencia joins the rest of Spain in experiencing surging coronavirus cases over the Christmas holidays. With the threat of the Omicron variant, the regional government has extended the use of the Covid passport to all hospitality establishments but as yet has declined to implement any stricter control measures.
In just two weeks the number of infections has doubled and with Omicron already circulating widely in Valencia, the effects are beginning to be felt in the hospitals.
Coronavirus infections
The regional health authorities have reported a total of 8,353 new coronavirus cases on Thursday December 30, which brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic in the community to 628,283.
The new cases by province are 1,023 in Castellón (69,736 in total); 2,317 in Alicante (226,465) and 5,013 in Valencia (332,081).
The number of unassigned cases remains at 1.
Cumulative incidence rate
The latest data shows that the 14-day incidence figure continues its steady climb and has risen to 1,082 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Hospitalisations
Valencian hospitals currently have 967 people admitted, 186 of whom are in the ICU: 173 in the province of Castellón, 24 in the ICU; 300 in the province of Alicante, 65 of them in the ICU; and 494 in the province of Valencia, 97 in the ICU.
Overall, 3,913 people have been discharged from the Community’s hospitals; the total number of patients who have overcome the disease since the pandemic began amounts to 572,354.
Hospitals and health centres in the province of Alicante are especially feeling the pressure, as patients have reported that they have been refused PCR tests by overwhelmed medical staff.
Fatalities
Sadly, a further six people have lost their lives to Covid since the last update, bringing the total number of fatalities since the start of the health crisis to 8,117.
Of the overall fatalities, 916 occurred in the province of Castellon, 3,121 in Alicante and 4,080 in Valencia.
The deceased on Thursday are two women aged 75 and 81 and four men aged between 58 and 92 years old.
Active cases
According to the latest data, there are currently 59,253 active cases, which represents 9.26% of the total positives.
Covid outbreaks
Two outbreaks have been reported in the educational field in Valencia, one with 14 cases and the other with 20 cases.
Vaccination data
To date, 90.3% of the population (4,054,572 people) have received their first dose while 4,137,425 people, representing 92.2% are now fully vaccinated.
