Horseback riding in Murcia: Best trails and tours
You can find horseback riding lessons and routes on the beach in English

So, if you want a different way to experience Spain, we highly suggest a horse-riding tour in Murcia. Why?
Well, there are a couple of reasons. First of all, the weather is perfect most of the year. Additionally, Murcia has an incredible landscape ranging from incredible mountains and parks to long beaches down by the sea. Now imagine riding a horse at sunrise at the beach, is there anything better and more relaxing than that?
So, if you are a horse lover or just someone who wants to experience Spain in a different way, or someone who is constantly scrolling through the best horse racing picks, we highly suggest visiting Murcia, the perfect place for horse riding.
Why Murcia is a horseback rider’s paradise
First of all, we are talking about a place located in the most vibrant region of Spain. Murcia is located in southeastern Spain, and it is a region that bursts with life – literally! You have deserts, fertile plains, beaches, mountains and everything in between.
Now you are probably getting an idea of why Murcia is a good place for horseback riding. The simple answer is: NATURE. It’s truly beautiful.
This vibrant landscape makes Murcia one of the top destinations for riders who love variety. But that’s not the only reason why this specific location is perfect for horseback riding.
The climate in Murcia is incredible. You’ll see sunshine most of the year, and the temperature never really drops and averages about 23°C throughout the year. Plus, Murcia gets over 300 days of sunshine a year, so you can go horseback riding without worrying about the rain ruining your plans.
Lastly, we are talking about a place with a big equestrian culture. Horses have always played an important role in Murcia, and you can spot that heritage reflected in the region’s well-maintained trails, professional riding schools, and plenty of horse-riding tours that are advertised around town.
Plus, they really appreciate a fellow rider, so you’d feel quite welcome here.
Top trails for horseback riding in Murcia
1. Sierra Espuña Regional Park
If you’re looking for a ride that combines natural beauty with a bit of adventure, Sierra Espuña is the place to go. This protected area is a patchwork of pine forests, rocky peaks and hidden valleys.
Trail highlights
- Ride through fragrant pine forests and open meadows
- Spot local wildlife like wild boar, eagles and mountain goats
- Stop at scenic viewpoints for photos (and maybe a picnic)
Best for: Intermediate to advanced riders who enjoy a bit of a challenge.
2. Calblanque Natural Park
For a coastal ride that’s hard to beat, head to Calblanque. This natural park is home to some of Murcia’s most stunning beaches, as well as rugged cliffs and dunes.
Trail highlights
- Gallop along pristine, golden beaches
- Explore hidden coves and crystal-clear waters
- Take in panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea
Best for: Beginners and experienced riders alike. The flat terrain and gentle slopes make it accessible for all levels.
3. Ricote Valley
Known as the “Valley of the Moors”, Ricote is a lush, green oasis nestled between mountains. It’s a peaceful, picturesque setting that feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
Trail highlights
- Follow ancient irrigation channels through citrus groves and palm forests
- Pass by traditional whitewashed villages
- Enjoy the scent of orange blossoms and the sound of birdsong
Best for: Leisurely riders who want to soak in the scenery and history.
4. Carrascoy and El Valle Regional Park
Just a short ride from Murcia city, this park offers a mix of rugged terrain and stunning views. It’s a great option if you’re short on time but still want a memorable riding experience.
Trail highlights
- Climb to the summit of Carrascoy for breathtaking views of Murcia and the surrounding countryside
- Ride through aromatic scrubland and olive groves
- Visit the Sanctuary of La Fuensanta, a historic pilgrimage site
Best for: Riders who want a mix of nature and culture.
Guided tours
Most of the horse-riding tours aren’t advertised online, but you’ll spot a lot of horseback riding advertising around town.
We have a couple of fan favourite horse-riding tours in the Region of Murcia, such as Finca La Constancia, where you’ll get to explore a fun region in Murcia, and they have a range of horses to choose from depending on your horse-riding experience.
There is also the Club Hípico El Puntal, which most horse riders recommend, mainly because the people are so welcoming and friendly. Plus, they are knowledgeable about horses, and even if you’ve never ridden a horse before, they will guide you through the process.
This tour will take you on a stunning hack out to the Calblanque beach (even though you are not allowed on the beach due to conservation), and you’ll pass through fields and mountains. The rides can last up to 3 hours, but of course, it all comes down to your experience.
Tips for a great riding experience
- Wear the right gear: Comfortable pants, sturdy boots, and a helmet are a must. Don’t forget sunscreen and a hat for those sunny Murcian days.
- Stay hydrated: Riding can be thirsty work, especially in the heat. Bring plenty of water.
- Listen to your guide: They know the trails and the horses better than anyone. Trust their expertise.
- Respect the environment: Stick to marked trails and avoid disturbing wildlife.
So, if you find yourself going anywhere near Murcia, you have to try horseback riding. It will leave a long-lasting memory, and it might even give you that horse addiction that is hard to get rid of.
