ARCHIVED - Holiday warning as travellers to Spain face huge delays
UK and German holidaymakers will see flights disrupted to Spain, Portugal and Italy
Sun-seeking travellers face huge delays on flights to Spain, Portugal and Italy from next month as a new air traffic control system being launched by France will divert an unprecedented number of aircraft over German skies to reduce airborne traffic jams.
Dirk Mahns of the German air navigation service (DFS) confirmed that, as France’s new system is being installed, travellers can expect delays, changes to flights times and even diversions in some cases. Mr Mahns said: "Our aim is to keep these delays to a minimum. We are in close contact with our European partners in this endeavour. No country can deal with the current traffic situation on its own; it can only be done together.”
Passengers travelling from Germany and the UK will face flight disruptions for several months as a "large proportion of the traffic will be shifted to German airspace".

Holidaymakers have complained of “quarter of a mile” long queues in Heathrow airport this week and snarl-ups have already begun in the skies as routes are limited following the Russian invasion of Ukraine last month and the consequent airspace restrictions.
Aviation consultant John Strickland, director of JLS Consulting, said: "There could be annoying delays, half an hour or so, but delays seem to be a likely impact of traffic being routed out of French airspace into German or Polish airspace.
"This will affect flights out of the UK going down to places like Spain, Portugal, the Canary Islands, some parts of Italy, and so on. This is where there could be delays caused.
"But there is no safety risk."
