ARCHIVED - Hiker stumbles across unexploded bomb in Alicante mountain range
The mortar grenade with explosive charge was discovered in the Sierra de Alcoy on the Costa Blanca
Local Police were forced to cordon off a 'blast area' in the Sierra de Alcoy natural park and mountain range after a hiker stumbled across what appeared to be a mortar grenade.
The walker immediately contacted the police at the weekend who took precautionary steps by creating a security perimeter larger than a potential blast zone until a team from Alicante's explosives deactivation unit, Tedax, arrived.
Experts verified that the device was a 120mm mortar grenade with an explosive charge but no fuse, believed to be from the Spanish Civil War.
Tedax ruled out detonating the bomb in situ, due to the impact on the local natural area, and after verifying that the explosive charge was considered to be stable enough to be transported, it was taken to Agost firing range to be destroyed, according to police sources.
Meanwhile, several patrols were carried out in the surrounding area but no other similar devices were found.
The National Police are advising anybody who finds an explosive device to remain calm, keep a safe distance without touching the object and immediately notify the State Security Forces and Corps, informing them of the exact location and description of the device so that the necessary steps can be taken.
