ARCHIVED - Highest seven-day mortality rate in Spain: Valencia Covid update February 3
A further 26 deaths have been added to the 120 fatalities reported in Alicante province and the rest of the region over the previous seven days
Whilst infections have finally begun to slide with 179,785 active cases in the region, Covid mortality has not slowed down at all and the Valencia Community recorded the highest number of deaths in Spain in seven days (up to February 3) with 120 reported fatalities.
A further 26 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, along with 15,620 new positives.
To try to stem the new infections and fatalities, the Ministry of Health this week reopened mass vaccination centres in Alicante province, and has stepped up the vaccination of children in schools.
According to the latest health data, two thirds of schoolchildren aged 5-11 years old in the region have now received their first dose of the vaccine, 10% above the national average.
The child vaccination campaign began on December 15, and since then 226,911 paediatric doses have been administered: 79,635 in Alicante; 26,498 in Castellón; and 120,778 in Valencia.
In fact, more than 119,300 children have been vaccinated since the Christmas vacations when the campaign resumed. Of these, around 17,300 are children who, for whatever reason, did not receive the vaccine in the first phase and have therefore been vaccinated during this period.
Coronavirus cases
The regional Ministry of Health has reported 15,620 new Covid cases over the weekend, up from from 13,626 on Wednesday February 2. This brings the total number of positives since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,166,358.
By province: 1,599 have been recorded in Castellón (144,571 in total), 4,907 in Alicante (413,826), 9,114 in Valencia (607,956). There are five unassigned cases.
According to the health data, there are currently 179,785 active cases, which represent 15.26% of the total positives.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 1,741 people admitted to hospital with Covid 15 less than yesterday), 172 of them in ICU (two less): 259 in the province of Castellón, 19 in ICU; 560 in the province of Alicante, 59 of them in ICU; and 922 in the province of Valencia, 94 in ICU.
24,353 people have overcome the virus since the last update, substantially higher than the number of new infections, which means the total number of recoveries since the start of the pandemic now stands at 989,373.
By provinces, the recoveries are distributed as follows: 119,452 in Castellón, 355,825 in Alicante and 514,036 in Valencia. There are 60 unassigned cases.
Fatalities
26 Covid-related deaths have been reported since Wednesday's update, which brings the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis in the Valencia region to 8,641: 988 in the province of Castellón, 3,316 in Alicante and 4,337 in Valencia.
The deceased, who died within the last seven days, are 16 men, aged between 60 and 94, and 10 women between 73 and 95-years-old.
