ARCHIVED - Heroic firefighters save drowning dogs in Elche
The two pooches had fallen into a reservoir in the Baix Vinalopo municipality, and were unable to get out
A team of firefighters managed to rescue two dogs at risk of drowning after falling into an artificial pond, known as a ‘balsa’ in Spanish, in Elche on Wednesday morning, September 29.
The plastic lining of the balsa, used to irrigate the rural land and crops in the area, made it impossible for the two distressed dogs to get out on their own, and so a crew from Alicante Provincial Firefighters Consortium was despatched to pull the pair of canines to safety.

It’s not clear why the dogs were in the water in the first place, or who they belong to, but according to the firefighters, they are both “now in good condition”.
Earlier in the week, an off-duty police officer in Bigastro managed to capture a “fatigued” and “disoriented” black vulture at an industrial estate in the Alicante town.
