Guardamar invests €1.3 million in beach lifeguard and rescue services
The contract will cover lifeguards, rescue services and beach safety along Guardamar’s 11km stretch of coastline

The town council of Guardamar del Segura has launched a public tender for a new contract covering lifeguard, rescue, surveillance, first aid and accessible bathing services across its beaches, a project that will exceed €1.3 million.
The contract will cover the municipality’s 11 kilometres of coastline and includes the full range of safety and assistance services provided during the beach season.
The initial contract period will run for two years from the start date, which must be formalised within a maximum of 15 calendar days after the contract is signed. However, the agreement may be extended to run up to four years in total.
Beach safety services will operate according to the seasonal timetable defined in the tender documents, which divides the year into off-season, low, medium and high seasons depending on visitor numbers and beach use.
The Guardamar council has also confirmed that an additional peak season service during Holy Week will not form part of this contract. Instead, maritime safety services during Easter will be awarded through a separate tender process that is currently underway.
The announcement follows a controversial lifeguard contract last year, when the Spanish Red Cross was excluded from the bidding process. Instead, the service was awarded to an Andalucian company for a one-year contract.
During the summer of 2025, a number of problems were reported, with lifeguards complaining about a lack of equipment and deficiencies in the materials available to carry out their work.
Due to the contractor’s failure to meet some of its obligations, the town council had to reinforce the service using its own resources. This included deploying two quad bikes from the Local Police to help cover beach patrol duties.
The companies now bidding for the contract will need to demonstrate they have sufficient staff, equipment and operational capacity to guarantee safety along Guardamar’s entire coastline.
