ARCHIVED - Good Samaritans help nab bag snatcher who targeted elderly woman in Callosa de Segura
Witnesses to the violent theft in the Vega Baja town detained the handbag thief until police arrived
Quick-thinking members of the public helped nab a thief who violently snatched a 72-year-old woman's handbag in Callosa de Segura on Sunday January 16.
The 42-year-old Spanish man allegedly targeted the elderly woman as she was walking through the San Marcos neighbourhood at around 3pm.
But as he tried to make a run for it with the pensioner's bag and purse, a group of people who had witnessed the robbery jumped into action, detaining the suspect until Callosa de Segura Local Police arrived and arrested him.
The victim, who was checked over by paramedics at the scene, was reunited with her stolen belongings and the alleged would-be thief has been charged with robbery with violence.
Officers in Callosa also dealt with three motorists caught driving under the influence or whilst banned over the weekend, and arrested a man in possession of a large quantity of marijuana.
