ARCHIVED - Getting out of hand: community fed up of trash and food waste from new KFC littering Puerto de Mazarron
Strewn rubbish from the recently opened chicken restaurant in Puerto de Mazarrón has been causing a nuisance to local businesses

“This is what the stairs to my salon looks like every morning”: Trash at the entrance to the Loft Hair & Beauty Salon in Puerto de Mazarrón
Local business and residents in Puerto de Mazarrón have charged against the recently opened KFC, saying that garbage from the fast-food restaurant is ending up strewn around the surrounding area.
Local hairdresser at the nearby Loft Hair & Beauty Salon on Avenida Doctor Meca, Leanne Capleton, has been in dispute with KFC regarding their food waste all over the ground, which she says is putting off customers coming to her salon.

Leanne says she suggested that KFC get a lockable bin instead of throwing their trash in the general public bin, so that people can’t get the food waste out, but says they refused.
“We have them in the UK as it goes against environmental standards,” she said, “but when I suggested it here they said, ‘No we don’t do that in Spain’.”

Leanne herself said, “I’m all for having KFC as I think it’s good for the area.” But she also points out that the bins are overflowing and there’s rubbish everywhere.
She has been fobbed off by her landlord, who says it’s not their responsibility to clear up the mess either, and now she is at her wits’ end about what to do.

It is not clear who exactly is spreading the waste all around, but what’s certain is that it is affecting the local community.
“It’s getting out of hand now,” said Leanne. “I’ve noticed a real difference this year. It’s a shame as lots of my clients are now commenting and most won’t walk up the stairs where the food and rubbish is.”
