ARCHIVED - Get the brollies out, wet weekend ahead: Spain weather Dec 1-4
The weekend will be marked by a drastic drop in temperature across Spain as winter well and truly sets in
After a pretty stable week, the weather in Spain is about to take a definite wintery turn as we enter the first weekend of December, with plummeting temperatures and heavy rain that will finally reach the Mediterranean coast. Snow is forecast in the north of Spain in the coming days as the thermometers reach sub-zero in many regions.
The change has already begun on Thursday December 1 with heavy showers and occasional storms hitting the Gulf of Cádiz. As the day turns towards evening, the rain will concentrate in the Mediterranean, bringing particularly heavy downpours to the Valencian Community.
The mercury has also taken a nosedive, most noticeably in Cantabria and the extreme south of the country, while Malaga and Almeria are unlikely to see temperatures much above the high teens.
Rainy weather will persist across the Mediterranean regions on Friday December 2, with some very heavy spells forecast in central and south Valencia and the Region of Murcia. The Canary Islands are also in for a predominantly wet day.
There will be a considerable drop in temperatures, with just about everywhere feeling colder due to the arrival of a frigid polar air mass. The mercury will remain in the low 20s in the Canaries despite the rain but few other regions will see the thermometers rise above the mid teens.
A bit of a change is expected on Saturday December 3 with the temperatures rebounding, especially along the east coast where Alicante will bask in a balmy enough 18ºC and Seville and Cádiz should hit 19ºC.
However, the snow levels will drop to 700-800 metres in the northeast, and the showers will persist in the Canary Islands, the Mediterranean coast and the southeast of the country.
Widespread rain is expected on Sunday December 4 although the temperatures will continue to rise in almost the entire eastern part of Spain. The day will begin with cloudy spells but these will develop as the afternoon moves in, leading to a rather dark evening in the southwest.
