Get ready for a cold snap: Spain weather forecast Feb 22-25
The weather in much of Spain will be “cold and unpleasant” this weekend
Weather warnings on Friday February 23
The arrival of an Atlantic front, which will cross Spain from northwest to southeast over the next few days, will bring the country’s weather firmly back to more usual February behaviour. As has been the trend of late, the Mediterranean will dodge the worst of the chill and the rain, but the rest of the country can expect a “cold and unpleasant” weekend overall, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
The snow level is set to plummet to just 700 metres along with a “generalised and marked” drop in temperatures, particularly in the north and southeast. What’s more, a fierce wind will pick up, placing several regions, including Andalucía and the Region of Murcia, under weather alerts.
Thursday February 22
The wind began to gain strength in the northwest of Spain on Wednesday February 21, but it will be on Thursday that the cold front extends throughout the country. Abundant cloudiness and occasional rainfall will move from northwest to southeast and the temperatures will fall accordingly, but the mercury will actually continue to climb along the Mediterranean coast, reaching a spring-like 26ºC in parts of Alicante.
An intense wind is expected to blow from the southwest, prompting orange weather warnings in Andalucía, Asturias, Cantabria, Galicia and the Basque Country, while Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, the Region of Murcia, Navarra and La Rioja all come under a yellow alert.
Friday February 23
A wet and active weather system will move into the Mediterranean region and the Balearic Islands, bringing clouds and rain to the area. There is a chance of showers in the northeast of Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and the Malaga mountain ranges.
The front will also bring cloudy skies and widespread showers to the northwest and Pyrenees, with a possibility of thunderstorms in Galicia. Scattered and light rain is possible in other parts of the country, but it is unlikely in the rest of the Mediterranean area and the Guadalquivir.
Daytime temperatures will drop sharply, most notably in the southeast.
A red weather alert for rough seas has been activated in Galicia. An orange warning remains in place in Andalucía, Asturias, Cantabria, Galicia and the Basque Country while Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia and the Region of Murcia fall under a yellow alert.
Saturday February 24
In most of the country and the Balearic Islands, a strong northwesterly wind will be followed by a warm front, bringing cloudy skies and rainfall. Galicia, the Cantabrian Sea and the Western Pyrenees can expect heavy rain, with a chance of strong or prolonged rain in those areas. Other parts of the Atlantic coast may experience lighter, more scattered rainfall.
Temperatures will decrease in the southeastern half of the country and rise in the western half.
The red weather warning remains in place in Galicia. An orange alert has been issued for Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country while a yellow warning is in place in Andalucía and Aragón.
Sunday February 25
Heavy rain is expected in the northwest and Pyrenees, especially in Galicia and the western Pyrenees, where it may be severe. Rain is likely to spread southeast, but will be less intense and more scattered, while temperatures will rise across the country.
