German tourist dies after mistaking campervan door with toilet while speeding along Spanish motorway
The 84-year-old woman tumbled from the motorhome travelling at 90 km/h on the A7 in Valencia
A freak accident on a Spanish motorway has claimed the life of an 84-year-old German tourist, who fell from a moving campervan while travelling with her daughter-in-law.
The incident, which occurred on the A7 motorway in Valencia, has left authorities and witnesses stunned, and a community in shock.
According to eyewitnesses, the motorhome, driven by the victim's daughter-in-law, was travelling at a speed of 90 km/h in the left-hand lane when the right-hand side door suddenly swung open, and the elderly woman tumbled out onto the road.
A lorry driver behind the campervan witnessed the horrific scene and immediately called the emergency services.
Tragically, an oncoming car was unable to avoid the elderly woman, and she was run over and killed instantly. The motorhome continued driving, unaware of the tragedy that had just unfolded.
The driver, who has not been named, stopped at a petrol station 8.5 kilometres down the road, where she claimed that she had heard a loud bang in the back of the camper and was unable to locate her mother-in-law. It was only when she stopped to use the public toilets that she realised something was amiss and asked for help.
Investigations suggest that the victim may have mistaken the exit door of the campervan for the bathroom door, leading to the tragic accident. Her fall occurred at around 5.30am when it was still pitch dark, so she may have become confused.
The driver's account of events has been corroborated by two witnesses, and there is no evidence to suggest that a third person was present in the vehicle.
While the victim’s daughter-in-law hasn’t been charged with any crime, police did comment on the fact that the elderly woman was clearly moving around in the back of the camper, which is strictly prohibited when these types of vehicles are moving.
