ARCHIVED - Gang that used kids to steal for drugs arrested in Torrevieja
Criminal gang "recruited" minors in parks in the Vega Baja, Alicante province.
A gang that allegedly used children to commit crimes in Torrevieja, mainly home break-ins, and "paid" them with drugs, has been arrested.
The group was made up of seven adults, including the two ring leaders, who were reportedly in charge of "enlisting" minors in local parks, initially offering them hashish, marijuana and ecstacy pills to try, before forcing them to carry out robberies and other crimes to pay for them.
A five month investigation and surveillance operation was launched earlier this year, after the Guardia Civil connected a number of crimes involving young people, who had stopped going to school and were allegedly selling items stolen from relatives to pay for drugs.
Once confident the gang was involved in grooming minors, setting up houses in which to store stolen goods, the sale of stolen items on the black market and the sale of drugs in playgrounds, six men, aged between 22 and 37, a 21-year-old woman and four teenagers (aged 15 to 17), were arrested last week.
They have been charged with 12 robberies, drug trafficking and receiving stolen goods, while the two "ring leaders" have been remanded into custody.
