ARCHIVED - Fuel bonus: Spain considers maintaining the fuel discount beyond December 31
Petrol and diesel in Spain are still subject to a reduction of 20 cents per litre
The Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Raquel Sánchez, confirmed this week that "the Government bonus of 20 cents per litre of fuel" could be extended beyond December 31, when the current measures are due to expire.
As this date approaches, she explained, the application of the fuel discount will be fully analysed and a final decision will be made in advance.
After a rather shaky start that saw filling stations up and down the country raising their prices to offset the petrol and diesel discounts, the scheme certainly appears to be taking effect. Sadly though, Spain is now well above the EU average and although petrol costs plummeted last week, it is still 46% more expensive than this time last year.
At the same briefing on Tuesday August 16, Ms Sánchez also referred to the proposal of the Servei Català de Trànsit (SCT) to reduce traffic speed along some sections of the AP-7 motorway, explaining that the suggestion will be considered "if it can be useful to improve the capacity of the road".
And in what will come as a great relief to drivers across Spain, the minister has ruled out putting tolls on the country’s dual carriageways and highways for the time being, until a consensus is established which is more "in line with what is done in the rest of Europe".
