ARCHIVED - French and Polish fugitives arrested in Alicante
The criminals will now be extradited from Spain
The National Police in Alicante have arrested two French and Polish fugitives who had been issued with a European Arrest Order for Extradition (OEDE) by the Polish and Belgian authorities. Both were considered violent criminals and had been hiding out for some time in the city.
The first of the fugitives was collared during a routine patrol of the Alicante streets and was wanted for crimes of robbery with violence and misappropriation. The detainee was spotted acting suspiciously and was questioned by officers, who quickly established that he was a wanted man.
The arrest warrant had been issued by the Belgian authorities for the 24-year-old French national, who now faces 20 years in prison for crimes committed in August.
The second suspect, a 40-year-old Polish citizen, was located in a hotel by Citizen Security officers and was wanted for the misappropriation of more than 220,000 zloty (47,000 euros).
According to the authorities, the criminal had borrowed the money from an acquaintance between 2013 and 2015 and refused to repay the loan. He is facing a prison sentence of one year and eight months in Poland.
The Central Investigating Court is currently processing the extradition orders for both fugitives.
