ARCHIVED - Free high-speed internet at 11 new locations in Murcia
Free wireless connectios are available in the city centre and Murcia districts

Murcianos can now access free high-speed Internet at 11 new locations in the city centre and districts, including squares and parks in Corvera, El Palmar, Guadalupe, Nonduermas, Puente Tocinos, El Raal, Algezares, offering a total of 21 points.
The move is part of the European initiative 'Wifi4EU', providing free wireless connection to some 9,000 municipalities in Europe, 224 of them in Spain, at a cost of 120 million euros.
Some 15,000 euros has been allocated by the European programme in Murcia to reduce the "gap" in internet access in the city and districts due to lack of infrastructure and speed up the slower ones.
Previously, free networks could have, by law, up to a maximum of 0.25 megabytes per second (MB/s), unlike these new networks, which will have a minimum connection of 30 MB/s, more than 100 times faster.
The ban on high-speed networks was imposed by the National Markets Commission to avoid "unfair competition" with internet providers, according to the Murcia city's Councillor for Health and Digital Transformation of the City Council of Murcia, Esther Nevado, who explained that with 'Wifi4EU' an exception has been made because "it comes directly from the European Union".
The 21 points in the municipality of Murcia are in 11 different locations, seven of them in districts, divided between Corvera, in its cultural centre; El Palmar, in the senior centre and the garden in front of the police station; Guadalupe, in its cultural centre; Nonduermas, at its Mayor's Office; Puente Tocinos, at the cultural centre and senior centre; El Raal, in its cultural centre, and Algezares, also in its cultural centre.
The city centre points are in the Artillery Barracks, the Old Prison, La Merced and the Saavedra Fajardo building.
To access the free WiFi, users simply have to log in from a mobile phone, tablet or laptop.
