ARCHIVED - Flooding in Dolores near Orihuela to be tackled with emergency measures
The municipality in the Vega Baja del Segura comarca of Alicante province is investing €900,000 to prevent problems after heavy rain.
Hydraulic works are being carried out in Dolores, 21km from Orihuela, to reinforce the town's infrastructure and avoid future flooding.
Giant new pipeline is being laid in the 'Azarbe de El Acierto' as it passes through an industrial area of the municipality to try to protect farming land and local businesses.
The aim is "to avoid flooding following episodes of torrential rains, like that experienced after phenomena such as DANA in September 2019".
The current infrastructure doesn't have sufficient capacity to collect large amounts of water and creates a funnel, which causes greater flooding and for longer periods of time in cases of heavy rainfall.
So to minimise the risk to surrounding industrial warehouses, homes, business terraces and farming land, the capacity has been increased to allow water to be efficiently drained away from the area.
The pressure is on to finish the works in the next four months to reduce, as much as possible, the inconvenience to residents and businesses, and to ensure that the town is prepared for torrential rains expected in September.
A provincial government study commission on flood risks in the Vega Baja del Segura has revealed its findings 20 months after the DANA of September 2019, with proposals such as floodable green corridors, permeabilised roads so that they don't act as barriers and more 'urban discipline' and sensitivity to the effects of climate change.
It was launched at the end of January 2020 in Orihuela following the torrential rains between September 11 and 14, 2019, when up to 500 mm (litres per square metre) fell in one day.
The storms caused extensive damage across the Vega Baja, and €9.6 million government funding was assigned to try to compensate for the devastation caused.
