Five plans that will make Almería one of your favourite destinations
Skip the usual beach routine and discover five unforgettable experiences that make Almería one of Spain's best holiday destinations

Almería has long been a favourite summer escape and it's easy to see why. Unlike many parts of the Spanish coast, much of the province has managed to hold onto its wild, unspoilt character. You'll still find quiet coves, dramatic natural landscapes and nights where the stars put on a better show than the streetlights.
Of course, not everyone wants to spend an entire holiday moving between the beach, the pool and the nearest chiringuito. If you're looking to see a different side of Almería, these five experiences are well worth adding to your itinerary.
1. Explore Cabo de Gata by kayak
Cabo de Gata's rugged coastline is spectacular from the shore, but it's even more impressive from the water. Hiring a kayak lets you paddle beneath volcanic cliffs, discover hidden coves and explore sea caves that many visitors never get to see.
For something a little different, several companies also offer transparent kayaks, giving you a clear view of the seabed as you glide across the crystal-clear Mediterranean.
2. Swap the coast for the Tabernas Desert
One of Almería's greatest surprises is how quickly the scenery changes. Just a short drive inland, you'll find yourself in the Tabernas Desert, Europe's only true desert and the backdrop for countless classic Western films.
Whether you explore by buggy, 4x4 or even camel, it's an unforgettable way to experience a landscape of dry riverbeds, rocky ravines and dramatic ochre hills that feels a world away from the coast.
3. Unwind in a traditional Arab bath
After days of sightseeing and sunshine, few things are more relaxing than a visit to a traditional hammam.
Inspired by centuries-old Andalusian bathing traditions, these peaceful retreats combine warm pools, steam rooms and massage treatments to help you cool down and recharge before your next adventure.
4. Discover Almería's history in a different way
Almería city is packed with fascinating landmarks, from the imposing Alcazaba fortress and the Cathedral to the historic English Cable and the remarkable Civil War shelters.
If standard guided tours aren't your thing, theatrical walking tours offer a fun alternative. Actors bring historical characters to life as you explore the streets, making the city's past far more memorable, especially for families with children.
5. Watch the stars come out over Cabo de Gata
When the sun goes down, Cabo de Gata reveals another of its greatest attractions.
Thanks to very low levels of light pollution, the natural park is one of the best places in southern Spain for stargazing. With interest growing ahead of next month's total solar eclipse, astronomy experiences are becoming increasingly popular, giving visitors the chance to learn about constellations, planets and the night sky under some of the clearest conditions in the country.
Whether you're travelling as a couple, with friends or as a family, it's a memorable way to end the day and one that many visitors say becomes the highlight of their holiday.
