Fishing hooks planted in meat to kill pet dogs on the Costa Blanca
One Pilar de La Horadada pet had a lucky escape when he picked up the spiked meat
Costa Blanca animal lovers have been horrified to discover that some unscrupulous individual has been hiding deadly sharp fishing hooks in chunks of meat and leaving them along path that dog walkers frequent.
Sadly, this kind of depraved prank is anything but rare and the latest incident was shared by the Local Police in Pilar de la Horadada, where a dog was badly injured after picking up one of the strategically placed hooks in its mouth.
“It was on the verge of swallowing it” before the owner noticed and snatched it away, an officer explained.
The near-miss occurred last Thursday January 23 on the popular walkway that runs through the town centre of Pilar de la Horadada, next to the Los Segundas neighbourhood. A quick search of the area by police turned up an additional 12 sabotaged pieces of meat, all hidden in the grass and ready to be sniffed out by innocent dogs.
Pilar’s local police force has opened an investigation to try to find the person responsible. In the meantime, they have urged pet owners to remain vigilant and to report any more finds to the authorities.
This kind of intentional animal abuse carries severe penalties in Spain. Back in 2023, a man was sentenced to seven months behind bars after he was found placing meat filled with sharp objects outside his Jaén home and in popular pet walking areas.
The convicted offender was caught red-handed minutes after leaving spiked food in a public area following numerous police complaints from members of the public back in 2020.
