ARCHIVED - First winter DANA hits Spain: weather update November 22
Temperatures will drop drastically this week in Spain and 11 regions have been put on alert
With much of Spain labouring under a deluge of rain over the past few days and reports of cars even being swept away in Cartagena, the news doesn’t get much better as State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has placed 11 autonomous communities on alert for rain, strong winds and snowfall on Monday November 22.
From the beginning of the week, an ‘isolated depression at high levels’, more commonly known as a DANA, will cause drastic changes in the thus-far balmy weather. Aemet has warned that the DANA will arrive in Spain through the northern part of the country, bringing with it a polar air mass that will cause a sharp drop in temperatures as the week goes on.
Aragon has been issued with an orange warning in the provinces of Teruel and Zaragoza, which could see an accumulation of 20 centimetres of snow in just 24 hours, with similar predictions in place in La Rioja.
Madrid, Cantabria, Asturias and Castilla y Leon are all on yellow alert for snowfall of up to 10 centimetres, while the Castilla-La Mancha provinces of Cuenca and Guadalajara can expect to be blanketed with two centimetres.
In Andalucía, the Balearic Islands, Galicia and the Valencian Community a yellow warning for strong gusts, rain and storms will remain in place throughout Monday.
The drop in temperatures will extend throughout Spain on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, snowfall is expected once more in the same regions. The mercury is set to rise in the middle of the week with the storm receding to the east on Thursday. Aemet has cautioned that the reprieve will be short-lived, however, as it will be replaced by yet another storm from the north, and the wintery weather is forecast until at least the end of the week.
Aemet has warned that an orange alert signifies a high meteorological risk with a certain degree of danger associated with everyday activities.
