ARCHIVED - Firefighters battle blaze at Elche footwear factory for six hours
Flames ravage shoe plant in the Baix Vinalopo, Alicante province.
An industrial footwear factory in Elche has been completely gutted in a blaze which took firefighters six hours to extinguish.
Flames ripped through the building on the Altet road after the alarm was raised at around 10.45pm, with a team of 14 firefighters from Elche, Elda and Creviellente dispatched immediately to the scene, equipped with a Command Headquarters Unit (UMJ), a Heavy Rural Pump (BRP), three Heavy Nurse Pumps (BNP), and a Heavy Urban Pump (BUP) before working overnight to bring the fire under control.
The flames were finally doused at around 4.30am, and thankfully there were no reported injuries, although the factory has been reduced to a charred shell, according to Alicante Provincial Consortium of Firefighters.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
A multinational Cemex factory in Alicante's San Vicente del Raspeig was gutted in a spectacular fire last week, when fire engulfed the rubber and flooring manufacturing plant.
