ARCHIVED - Finishing touches added to Plaza Bohemia in La Manga with 1,200 square metres of pedestrian space
New bike lanes and wider footpaths will safely connect nearby streets with the Cartagena commercial centre
The final flourishes have been applied to the long-awaited Plaza Bohemia of La Manga commercial centre and leisure area, with the addition of almost 1,200 square metres of pedestrian space.
The impressive open-plan boulevard, developed within the ‘Edusi La Manga 365 Strategy’, was toured by Cartagena mayor Noelia Arroyo this week, who is hopeful that the development of “this traditional and symbolic corner of La Manga” will breathe new life into the coastal municipality.
"Plaza Bohemia becomes a wide commercial and leisure boulevard in the open air to develop different activities simultaneously in this coastal enclave that will generate social and economic dynamism in an open environment of more than 1,200 square meters that allows the local economy and the commercial sector of this coastal enclave to be energised,” Minister of Development, José Ramón Díez de Revenga, added.
The latest phase of the works included building a large outdoor seating area that will welcome revellers for concerts and celebrations in the very near future, as well as the installation of new benches and shaded areas to protect visitors from the scorching summer heat.
The boulevard will offer exciting new business opportunities for companies in the area and provide an ideal leisure space for residents and visitors to the municipality.
The next stage of the project, which has just begun, will connect the Plaza with calles Dársena and Isla del Ciervo via a bike lane and wider footpaths for pedestrians.
In addition, the redistribution of traffic allows the creation of 35 new parking spaces, 3 accessible parking spaces, a charging area for electric vehicles and new bicycle parking spaces.
In keeping with the ecological aims of the Region, a drainage system has been installed that will carry runoff rainwater to the flowerbeds and green areas, and a stunning plant wall adds to the eco-friendly vibe.
Natural shadows are created by the dozens of trees dotted around the Plaza but 4 single-mast pergolas have also been added to create extra shade.
Finally, the Plaza Bohemia sign has been given pride of place.
