Fierce winds and warm temperatures: Spain weather forecast December 19-22
Several regions in Spain have been issued with alerts for strong gusts before the weekend
Weather alerts on Thursday
The last big shopping weekend before the Christmas holidays is almost here and most people will be wondering what the weather holds in store before venturing out. The answer isn’t straight-forward though, as the forecast across Spain is once again playing a game of two halves.
On the one hand, several regions have been issued with weather alerts for fierce winds, dangerously high waves, frost and even snow. On the other, temperatures will shoot up into the 20s in large parts of southern Spain.
Thursday December 19
A strong Atlantic front will sweep across most of Spain on Thursday, leading to overcast skies and rain in the entire country apart from the eastern coast.
Snow will fall in the northern mountains, starting above 2000 metres but dropping as low as 700-1000 metres in the Pyrenees.
The Canary Islands will enjoy stable weather, with partly cloudy skies or high cloud intervals and a bit of haze, especially in the morning, tending to clear up.
Temperatures will shoot up into the mid-20s along the Mediterranean coast and in the Balearic Islands, with drops expected everywhere else.
Strong winds will blow from the west and southwest across the country, and several regions have been put on alert for gusts and dangerous sea conditions.
Orange weather alerts for strong gusts/dangerous waves: the Balearic Islands, the Valencian Community, Catalonia.
Yellow weather alerts for strong gusts/dangerous waves: Andalucía, Aragon, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Galicia, Navarra, Basque Country.
Friday December 20
Thursday’s winds will continue to gain force and the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has warned of the chance of extremely strong gusts in the Valencian Community, the Balearics and Catalonia, which could lead to treacherous sea conditions also.
But aside from the wind, Friday should be pleasant and mild in most of the country, albeit a little cloudy. Any showers should be confined to the north.
Temperatures will drop by a few degrees in most parts but this will be especially felt in the southeast. At the same time, the frost will begin to spread to most of northern Spain and the mountain ranges of the southeast.
Orange weather alerts for strong gusts/dangerous waves: the Balearic Islands, the Valencian Community, Catalonia.
Yellow weather alerts for snowfall: Aragon, Asturias, Castilla y Leon, Navarra.
Saturday December 21
As we head into the last shopping weekend before Christmas the weather will turn a little chilly, although it will still be pleasant and dry with mostly clear skies.
However, a developing low pressure system in the southwest could result in an overcast day in Andalucía with a chance of rain around the Strait.
Daytime temperatures will rise in northern Spain but there will be few changes in the rest of the country, with the thermometers hovering around the high-teens and not breaching the 20-degree-mark anywhere but the Canary Islands.
Orange and yellow alerts for rough sea conditions: Balearic Island, Catalonia.
Sunday December 22
The settled weather will continue into Sunday, with light rain only forecast in the extreme north. Elsewhere, it should be dry and mostly bright with some cloudy intervals.
In the Canary Islands, however, the approach of a low pressure front from the northeast will result in cloudy or overcast skies and abundant rain accompanied by some storms.
Temperatures will tend to rise in mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, edging back up into the 20s in the likes of Alicante and Murcia.
