ARCHIVED - Extinction Rebellion Murcia stages Mazarron protest against cruel Spain octopus farm
El Puerto de Mazarrón was the scene of a dramatic and colourful protest with a serious message this weekend
This weekend, Extinction Rebellion Murcia and Murcia Animal Save, together with other assorted animal and environmental organisations from various parts of Spain, held a demonstration in El Puerto de Mazarrón against the building of the first commercial octopus farm in the world.
The protest was directed at Pescanova, a company that aims to construct the intensive octopus farm in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in Spain’s Canary Islands in the summer of 2022, and to begin marketing and selling the octopus by the tonne by 2023.
Despite the inclement weather, XR Murcia and Murcia Animal Save carried out a ‘die in’ on the Francisco Martínez Muñoz promenade on the El Puerto beach on Saturday February 26, representing the extinction of octopuses as a consequence of Pescanova’s new venture, which they say “hides ethical and environmental problems like the macro-farms on land”.

“We want to point out the sentence [being given to] these animals and the terrible consequences it would have for them and for climate change,” said the two organisations in a joint statement.
Interest in octopuses has soared in recent years. The Oscar-winning documentary ‘My Octopus Teacher’ highlighted some of the incredible reasons why these cephalopods have captivated us and offered a poignant insight into the lives of these unique, naturally solitary and fragile wild animals, as well as showing the world their intelligence, their curiosity and their sentience.
“We cannot allow these fascinating, intelligent and sensitive wild animals to fall victim to this exploitation and suffer lives on factory farms that are simply not worth living. We demand with this representation that the construction of the octopus farm in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria be stopped, given the serious environmental and animal welfare problems associated with octopus farming, this is not compatible with the new EU strategic guidelines for the sustainable development of aquaculture.”
