ARCHIVED - Extended Torrevieja-Alicante bus line goes out to tender
The 24.4 million-euro contract with 10 links will connect various towns with health, academic and leisure centres in Alicante province

A multi-million-euro bus line contract to create greater mobility between Torrevieja and the rest of the coastal towns in the Vega Baja region with Elche and Alicante city itself has gone out to tender.
The improved public service along the CV-214 Torrevieja-Alicante road aims to put an end to "poor bus links and a deficient connection between the municipalities of the region" following increased public demand.
The service will serve a population of around 890,000 inhabitants in Alicante, San Vicente del Raspeig, Santa Pola, Elche, Crevillente, Guardamar del Segura, Torrevieja, Pilar de la Horadada, Orihuela Costa, Rojales, San Fulgencio, Catral, Dolores, Daya Nueva, Daya Vieja, Benijófar, and San Miguel de Salinas.
The concession will have a minimum of 19 buses which, collectively, will cover around 1.3 million kilometres and more than 26,600 journeys annually, equivalent to an average of 73 journeys each day.
"The new contract, which amounts to 24.4 million euros, aims to maintain the level of service and functionality of the current mobility links, reinforcing direct connections with medium and long-distance transport modes - such as the airport and AVE stations - the cities of Alicante and Elche, and health centres, in particular the university hospitals Torrevieja and Alicante," explained Valencia's Regional Ministry of Transport.

In addition, the new service will improve links between the coastal towns of Pilar de la Horadada, Orihuela Costa, Torrevieja and Guardamar del Segura, and connections between Guardamar del Segura and San Fulgencio, Dolores and Catral.
"Priority has been given to people living in these particular municipalities with public transport connections to health, academic, administrative, commercial and leisure centres, as well as other modes of transport," added the regional government.
The "improved service" is part of a wider programme across the Valencia region where more than 90% of the public service contracts for regular intercity passenger travel by road have expired or are close to expiring.
"The current and outgoing system follows a model which is demonstrating shortcomings and issues that generate cost overruns and worsen the quality of the service to the public," added the Ministry.
