ARCHIVED - Eurovision 2022: Ukraine win, UK come second and Spain third
There were historic upsets on the night, but the final result was perhaps not a surprise
The final of the Eurovision Song Contest, which was held in Turin, Italy this Saturday, May 14, upset all received knowledge about Eurovision that we’ve held for at least 20 years. Well, maybe not all…
The United Kingdom have always done notoriously bad at Eurovision, frequently coming in the bottom five countries and receiving ‘nil points’. But this year, Sam Ryder’s chilling ‘Space Man’ almost made it all the way, receiving 12 points on multiple occasions in the judges voting.
Spain is another country that has performed poorly in Eurovision in recent years, as anyone who remembers ‘Do It For Your Lover’ by Manel Navarro in 2017 can attest. But incredibly, Spain ended up coming third this year with ‘SloMo’ by Chanel, a raunchy, flamenco-inspired, reggaeton hit reminiscent of breakout Spanish superstar Rosalía.
Alas, both the UK and Spain were pipped to the post at the very last by the public vote, which gifted Ukraine an almost unheard of 438, taking them convincingly to the top of the table in a move that many predicted beforehand.
Having won the competition this year, Ukraine has the honour of hosting next year. Given the precarious geopolitical situation in Ukraine right now, it’s unclear whether Kyiv (or Mariupol or Kherson, for that matter) will have the stability and the public funds necessary to put on such a show in 2023.
Optimists are hoping that the win will force Putin to withdraw his troops to allow Ukraine to rebuild in time for Eurovision.
Spain has already formally offered to host the next edition of Eurovision in the event that Ukraine is unable to do so.
