ARCHIVED - EU Covid Passport comes into force
Over 2.7 million certificates facilitating international travel have already been issued in Spain
The European Union’s Covid passport comes into force on Thursday 1st July, theoretically making it far easier for residents to travel among member states as the mass immunization program continues and the pandemic begins to ease.
In Spain the health authorities have already issued 2.7 million “Covid passports” in preparation for the new travel requirements, responding to a proposal which was first made by Greece at the start of this year with a view to reactivating international travel. The scheme was not accepted fully until May, but is already coming into force as the peak summer tourism season begins.
The Covid passports can be issued both digitally and in hard copy, the two versions sharing an individualized QR code. This code incorporates details of an individual’s Covid vaccination history, as well as whether he or she has already recovered from the virus or returned a negative PCR result in the previous 2 or 3 days.
However, by far the most frequent method used so far in Spain to request the passport is a vaccination certificate.
The certificates are issued by Spain’s regional health services as well as the national Ministry of Health, and the first were produced in the regions of Aragón, the Comunidad Valenciana and Extremadura on 7th June. In other areas such as the Basque Country only digital certificates have so far been issued, but hard copies will be presented as of 1st July.
