Murcia is catching up with the exploding trend of electric scooters with the arrival of a brand new rental service across the municipality this month. Initially, 400 of the personal mobility vehicles will be dotted across 250 parking stations for the bargain price of just 25 cents per minute, although various discounts will be available for the launch.

Murcia City Council signed the agreement with two companies, Superdestrian Spain and Bird Rides Spain, back in March and under the global umbrella of Mobility Spadimur, electric scooters are already hitting the streets.

The initial contract will last for one year but those involved plan to have more than 1,000 scooters on the roads before too long. All of the vehicles are 100% electric and will be serviced and maintained to the highest standard.

To reduce the risk of accidents, the minimum age to use the scooters, which will be available 365 days a year, has been set at 18, and riders will be able to hire them through a handy mobile app.

The companies will also provide a quarterly report to the Murcia City Council with the basic management indicators: weekly kilometres travelled, number of users, among other variables.

In Spain, the authorities are still working on a set of regulations that will include, among other things, limitations and rules for users of this type of transport. One such measure being considered is mandatory insurance cover for all electric scooter riders.
