ARCHIVED - Elche farmer faces fine of up to 60,000 euros for dumping lamb carcasses in ravine
Hikers discovered several animal corpses in Elche's Altabix district in Alicante province
Police are investigating a livestock farm in Elche after several decomposed lamb carcasses were discovered dumped in a ravine in the Altabix district of the town.
The grisly discovery was made by hikers on April 11 who contacted the Local Police. Officers searched the area and found skeletal remains of livestock with electronic identification ear tags still attached.
A computer check led the police's Urbanity and Environment Unit (UMA) to a livestock farm where they detected several breaches relating to animal welfare.
According to police sources, infringements included extremely poor bedding with no straw and a large accumulation of faeces. In addition, the farm lacked a compulsory cleaning plan for disinfection, disinfestation and rodent control (PLDDD).
"The law expressly prohibits the abandonment of dead or dying animals, and it is compulsory to contract the services of a carcass treatment manager for livestock species," explained Elche Local Police in a statement.
In cases like this, those responsible face fines of between 600 and 60,000 euros, as well as a temporary ban on any livestock activity for up to five years.
