ARCHIVED - Easter bookings in Spain up by 50 per cent
Travel agencies in Spain have reported a definite upturn although the war in Ukraine has affected reservations
Although the war in Ukraine and rising prices have slowed down the pace of Spanish bookings, professionals in the tourism sector are optimistic about the upcoming season, with reservations for Easter expected to increase by between 40% and 50% compared to last year.
With British travellers once again topping the list as the most frequent visitors to Spain, the Corporate Association of Specialised Travel Agencies (Acave) predicts an influx of tourists from the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg next month.
Despite the common view that this is “the beginning of the comeback for most companies in the sector,” Easter bookings are still only expected to reach around 70% of the pre-pandemic turnover of 2019, and the experts agree that it will most likely be 2024 before the industry has fully recovered.

For national destinations, the Canary Islands are preferred by the Spanish, followed by Catalonia, the Valencian Community and Andalucía. Likewise, there has been a significant rise in urban tourism related to traditional Easter getaways for families.
Martí Sarrate, president of Acave, believes the upturn in bookings clearly shows “that people want to travel,” and the survey carried out by the group indicates that 11% of agencies have not noticed any effect due to the war in Ukraine, while a considerable 72% confirm that the rate of reservations has certainly slowed down in recent weeks.
Travel agencies are almost perfectly divided in their opinion as to whether the pandemic is still affecting the decisions of holidaymakers: 58% believe that coronavirus is still a concern for tourists while 52% feel that Covid is no longer a deciding factor.
