A multiple accident involving six cars and leaving three people injured occurred on Saturday night, February 1, on the A-7 road between Puerto Lumbreras and Lorca after a vehicle was driven in the wrong direction. The driver responsible for the crash fled the scene, prompting an investigation by authorities.
Emergency Coordination Service 112 received an overwhelming response from concerned motorists, with 38 calls warning of the vehicle travelling against traffic at around 11pm. Witnesses reported that the car veered off the road before its driver escaped.
According to the Guardia Civil’s traffic division, the wrong-way driver caused the first vehicle to lose control and crash into a bollard, triggering a chain reaction that affected five additional cars. Reports indicate the driver was coming from Almería and heading towards Murcia.
Authorities have since identified the suspect vehicle and obtained its number plate, providing a significant lead in the ongoing investigation.
Emergency services responded swiftly, dispatching two 061 ambulances to the scene. Medical personnel treated three injured individuals: a 49-year-old man and a 25-year-old man, both transported to Rafael Méndez Hospital in Lorca, and a 50-year-old man who was treated at the scene. Fortunately, none of the injuries were classified as serious.
