ARCHIVED - Dozens of dead fish washed up at cove in Calpe, Alicante
The fish emanating a "bad smell" were discovered at Morelló cove in the Marina Alta area of Alicante province
Calpe's infamous 'crystal clear waters' have taken on a sinister appearance over the last few days as dozens of dead fish have washed up at Morelló cove, rapidly decomposing and giving off an "intense bad smell".
The first of the fish were discovered languishing near a mound of dumped plastic waste on Friday June 3 and over the next few days more and more fish perished close to the promenade.
The cove is very close to the Les Salines wetlands and, although it hasn't been officially confirmed, it's believed the dead fish may have come from there.
Most of the deceased are species commonly found in Les Salines, leading to the main theory that they were dragged to Morelló cove by a pumping system used to raise and lower water levels at the wetlands.
The pumping station causes the level of the wetland waters to drop in order to allow different species to nest, but in this last lowering it may well have dragged a large number of fish which then became stranded on the shore of the Morelló cove and died.
