ARCHIVED - Denia Hospital welcomes first baby born to fleeing Ukrainian in Spain
New mum Mariia arrived in the Marina Alta area of Alicante province on March 7

Around 80,000 heavily pregnant women are fleeing or have fled Ukraine following Russia's invasion on February 24, including 44-year-old Mariia who has given birth to the first baby born to a Ukraine refugee in Spain since the conflict.
Mariia's baby son arrived at Denia Hospital just after 4.25pm on Saturday March 12, weighing in at just under three kilos, and both are said to be "in perfect condition" on the hospital's maternity ward, according to the Ribera health group which manages the facility.
The new mum fled her hometown of Strutyn, near the Polish border, and arrived in Javea where her sister Natalia has lived for more than 20 years on March 7.
She left Ukraine by train and was met at the Polish border by her brother-in-law and nephew who had driven from Javea to pick her up.
She was admitted to the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department on Thursday afternoon, March 11, where she told the team of midwives who attended to her during the birth that she made the decision to leave Ukraine when she realised that the Russian air force was bombing hospitals.
"The obstetrics team has accompanied her at all times, as her husband, with whom she is constantly in contact with via video-call, has had to stay in Ukraine," explained Ribera in a statement, adding that Mariia also had a translator during the delivery thanks to Alla Smolyn, a Ukrainian woman who has been working in the hospital's Admissions Department for the last five years.
The Red Cross of Javea is now appealing for "solidarity to help Mariia", and urging locals to donate "items necessary for the baby's upbringing" and non-perishable food for other Ukrainian refugees arriving in the area.
