Denia celebrates the hatching of 66 baby loggerhead turtles
The turtle nest in La Punta was guarded by 160 volunteers until the hatchlings made their appearance

It’s been an incredibly successful breeding season for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle in the Valencian Community and Denia has been at the centre of the celebrations this week. A mum-to-be laid 66 eggs back on June 13 and they were quickly transferred to La Punta beach in the Albufera Natural Park, where they have been watched over day and night by a troupe of volunteers.
This year, the La Punta beach has been chosen by a total of 62 sea turtles to spawn and of the nests that have hatched, 94% of the youngsters are thriving, according to wildlife NGO Xaló.
The success of the Denia specimens is "an exciting and very encouraging figure for the survival rate of the nest," a Xaló spokesperson stressed, adding that the hatchlings were released into the sea at dawn to begin their lives in the wild.
Prior to their release, the team from this University and the Oceanogràfic carried out a measurement study and thoroughly examined the health of the hatchlings and the state of the nest.

Meanwhile, more than 160 volunteers are maintaining a vigil in the Tortuga 2023 Camp located in the Parador de El Saler as they wait for the remaining eggs to hatch.
"We expect a lot of success and hope from this season, but above all a lot of life," said Carla Eymar, head of Volunteering at the NGO Xaloc.
