Beachgoers in El Campello made the distressing discovery of a dead baby sperm whale on Thursday morning, July 21, in an advanced state of decomposition.

The calf's corpse was floating close to the shoreline at Muchavista beach and El Campello Town Hall was immediately notified.

Beach maintenance services cordoned off the area and using a tractor with backhoe loader, removed the young sperm whale's remains.

According to the local council, "the whale died on the high seas and the tide dragged its body in an advanced state of decomposition to the beach of Muchavista".

A necropsy will be carried out at the Institute of Coastal Ecology to determine the mammal's cause of death.
