Cycling race to disrupt traffic at Alicante Airport this Friday
La Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana will cause traffic diversions and roads closures in Alicante city and along the coast

The popular La Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana cycling race is taking place in Alicante this Friday February 6 and in addition to drawing huge crowds, the event will also cause a fair bit of traffic disruption. To allow cyclists to travel safely, a number of roads, including access to Alicante Airport and bus station, will be temporarily blocked off.
Several routes will be restricted or closed completely this Friday between 3pm and 4.45pm.
The race will cover a large part of the province after starting in Orihuela, entering the municipality of Alicante from the capital, and running along the entire coastline. From there, the peloton, made up of 126 cyclists, will take Avenida de Dénia towards San Juan, reach the area around the Santa Faz Monastery, and continue towards the municipalities of Jijona and Agost, before heading to Sant Vicent del Raspeig, where the planned route, covering 158 kilometres, will conclude.
Crucially, access to the airport from Alicante city centre will be diverted. This will be clearly signposted between the intersection of the N-332 and N-340, on Elche Avenue. The Urbanova neighbourhood will be cut off from the rest of the municipality for around 90 minutes. Access to the bus station will also be restricted.
Within the municipality of Alicante, traffic disruptions will be concentrated along the route that begins on the N-332, at the border with Elche, near the Aguamarga salt flats, and continues along Elche Avenue, Plaza del Arquitecto Miguel López, Loring and Mártires de la Libertad promenades, Puerta del Mar, Juan Bautista Lafora Avenue, Jovellanos Street, and Dénia Avenue, until reaching Sant Joan.
At this last point, the caravan will pass through the underpasses to minimise disruption to road traffic.
As the peloton passes through the underpasses on Avenida de Dénia, the surface intersections with Calle Canónigo Manuel Penalva, Avenida Pintor Xavier Soler (Gran Vía 9), Avenida Deportista Alejandra Quereda (Vía Parque), and the connection to the A-70 motorway will be open to traffic. However, access to Avenida de Dénia will not be permitted, according to Alicante City Council.
Parking along the entire race route will be prohibited and cleared from 10pm on Thursday February 5, and street closures will be implemented on all roads leading to the circuit.
The Councillor for Urban Mobility, Carlos de Juan, has recommended using the city's ring roads, both Gran Vía and Vía Parque, and the A7 motorway, avoiding the waterfront between 3pm and 5pm.
