ARCHIVED - Could Alicante become the new sailing capital of Spain?
Alicante is forging closer ties with the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation to promote sports tourism on an international level
Alicante has set its sights on becoming a contender for the title of sailing capital of Spain and is forging closer links with the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation to promote water sports tourism on an international level.
President of Alicante Provincial Council, Carlos Mazón, met with representatives from the Spanish federation and Alicante Royal Regatta Club this week to develop a programme of new events and sporting projects for both amateurs and professionals.
"Sports tourism is very important for our province. It offers a unique opportunity to boost the economy and promote the great sporting talent and magnificent tourist resources that Alicante has to offer," said Mazón.
A deep-rooted nautical tradition still exists in the province, and in addition to "excellent weather conditions, infrastructure and complementary services", Alicante is an ideal destination to host any event related to the sea", according to the provincial president.
One of the main events promoted by Alicante Royal Regatta Club is the 'Tabarca Vela Diputación de Alicante'. The event, in its 26th year, typically brings together around 40 boats and 350 athletes who sail a 26-mile route around the island of Tabarca.
Traditionally, the islands of Mallorca and Menorca are considered among the top sailing destinations in Spain, but Alicante Provincial Council hopes to create waves and become a contender through "continued support and promotion of water sports tourism".
