Cleaning of La Isla ornamental lake at Condado de Alhama to begin this May
An agreement to clean the lake was reached after a series of environmental concerns

Following a series of meetings and negotiations, the Town Council of Alhama de Murcia and the Entidad Urbanística de Conservación del Condado de Alhama have reached an agreement to begin cleaning the ornamental lake La Isla. This long-awaited action comes in response to the concerns raised by residents and the recommendations made by municipal technicians.
The lake at La Isla has at times been the site of nasty odours and pest infestations due to stagnant water. After the change of government team at Alhama de Murcia Town Hall, they have reaffirmed their commitment to solving the environmental problem as swiftly as possible in a way that satisfies all parties.
The cleaning work is scheduled to commence between May 5 and 10, 2025, starting in the areas closest to the swimming pools adjacent to the lake. The process is expected to take approximately four weeks.
To support this initiative, the Entidad Urbanística contracted a specialised environmental engineering firm to carry out a detailed analysis of the lake’s current condition. Based on their findings, a comprehensive plan of action has been drawn up, aimed at restoring the lake to a healthy and sustainable state.
“The aim of this and other measures to be taken is to bring the Condado lake to optimum condition. It is a general system for the urban complex and the residents deserve these conditions,” said Antonio José Caja, the councillor responsible for Town Planning.
The plan, which includes measures such as sludge removal, installation of aeration and oxygenation systems, and the elimination of invasive carp species. These actions are expected to have a direct and positive impact on the lake’s water quality.
The Town Council reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside the conservation entity to safeguard public health and improve the municipality’s natural spaces. The move is seen as a significant step forward in addressing a problem that has plagued the community for several years.
Further updates will follow as the cleaning operation gets underway and the long-term improvement strategy is rolled out.
