ARCHIVED - Cieza earthquake felt by residents: January 7
IGN reports that the tremor was significant enough to be felt by residents in the Region of Murcia
The Region of Murcia was affected by a 2.7-magnitude earthquake in the municipality of Cieza in the early hours of Friday morning, January 7.
According to IGN (National Geographic Institute), the seismic activity was registered at approximately 4.30am, at a depth of seven kilometres, and was felt by several residents in the area despite only coming in at 2.7 on the Richter magnitude scale.
Earthquakes are relatively rare in the Region of Murcia, unlike in neighbouring Andalucía, where the coast is plagued with minor tremors due to its proximity to the meeting point of the Eurasian and African tectonic plates.
