Ceutí set to dive into summer pool fun after 25-year wait
€1.6 million project will end the Murcia region's last pool-less town by 2027
After nearly three decades without a public summer swimming pool, Ceutí Ayuntamiento has unveiled plans to build one, making it no longer the only municipality in the Region of Murcia missing this basic service.Mayor Sonia Almela announced the preliminary project this week, stressing that sound financial management has made it possible. "Today, Ceutí is a solvent Ayuntamiento that plans, delivers on its promises, and invests wisely. This investment is not a whim; it is a structural decision that will improve the quality of life for our residents," she said.
The initiative comes with an estimated cost of €1.6 million, funded through a public-private concession backed by a feasibility study to ensure it runs sustainably. Almela, from the PSOE, described the long absence as "a historical inequality that needed to be corrected." She added, "For 25 years, entire generations of Ceutí residents have had to travel to other municipalities to enjoy something as basic as a public summer swimming pool. Governing also means daring to correct inequalities."
The preliminary draft, along with tender documents and the feasibility study, goes before an extraordinary plenary session on March 17. That's also when the 2026 budget, already given a green light by the Ministry of Finance, will be presented. If approved, bidding starts right away, with works potentially beginning after summer and wrapping up in seven months. That timeline points to Ceutí enjoying its new pool as early as 2027.
The mayor is also pressing the PP-led Regional Government to chip in, based on territorial equity. It's a fair ask for a town that's lagged behind neighbours on such an everyday facility. For families here, especially in the heat of Murcia summers, this can't come soon enough. Pool time close to home will be a game-changer.
