ARCHIVED - Catamaran Ole sinking in Cartagena caused by possible factory defect
All of the passengers have now been released from the Santa Lucía Hospital in Cartagena, Murcia
After a tourist boat sank with 33 passengers onboard just a mile off Cartagena this Sunday November 14, investigators are looking into what went wrong with Catamaran Ole, which has been taking hundreds of passengers on day trips for almost a decade.
At first, the authorities thought that the boat could have collided with something in the water, but this was ruled out after divers from the Special Subaquatic Activity Group of the Guardia Civil inspected both the catamaran and the area where it sank.
Now, the primary hypothesis is that Catamaran Ole, which had all the necessary documentation and had passed all technical inspections, had some kind of factory defect which caused the structure to split in two.
However, the Maritime Accident Investigation Commission of the Ministry of Transport is keeping the investigation open and Maritime Rescue services are monitoring the scene to prevent other boats from colliding with the wreckage of Catamaran Ole. They are also issuing radio warnings to exercise extreme caution in the area.
Meanwhile, the ten passengers who were taken to the Santa Lucía Hospital to be treated for hypothermia, dizziness and bruising on Sunday night were released on Monday November 15 and luckily, all 33 passengers are now in good health.
