Casa de Cultura Francisco Rabal in Águilas
The Casa de Cultura in Águilas also houses the public library
The new Casa de Cultura of the town of Águilas is located in Plaza Asunción Balaguer, close to the tourist office in the centre of the town and just a short walk from the main harbour and the Playa de la Colonia.
Apart from being home to the town’s public library it is also a commonly used venue for cultural events such as exhibitions and performances, and on permanent display are some of the works by the local painter and photographer José Matrán, one of whose works is also housed in the Iglesia de San José.
Also prominent are various trophies and personal memorabilia which belonged to Francisco Rabal, the famous screen actor after whom the centre is named and who was a native of Águilas. Francisco (or Paco) Rabal is probably Águilas’ most famous son, and these items were donated by his family when the actor died in 2001, six months after this building was officially opened in his presence.
On the ground floor is the Manuel Coronado exhibition room, named after the film-maker who also attended the official opening of the building, while on the first floor is a multi-use room and the permanent exhibition of works by José Matrán.
The library is on the second floor, and is home to two reading rooms and various smaller rooms. Approximately 20,000 books are kept here, and full internet facilities are available.
The library opens on weekdays from 9.00 to 14.00 and 16.00 to 21.00, while the exhibition rooms normally open to the public only in the evening, from 18.00 to 21.00.
The library and Casa de Cultura telephone number is 968 413305.
