Cartagena Christmas lights: This is when the Xmas lights are switched on 2023
The festive decorations will be in more Cartagena city streets than ever this year, but what Christmas lights are planned and when will they be turned on?
This year, the Christmas lights in the streets of Cartagena will be bigger and more widespread than ever, according to an announcement from the City Council.
The popular white LED almond branches that usually adorn the Calle del Carmen street every year will also be put up in other areas of the city, including Puertas de Murcia, Santa Florentina, Jabonerías and the Plaza San Sebastián.
In addition, there will be new “unique elements” to the Cartagena Christmas lighting display this year, as these branches will have “decorative elements in matt gold and shades of purple and pink” so that it will not just be at night that they shine but also in the light of day.
In the Plaza del Ayuntamiento there will be a 6-metre-tall Christmas tree imported from Scandinavia and in Plaza Juan XXIII there will be a giant, 10-metre-high snowman.
As well as Cartagena city centre, the lights will be installed in the wider neighbourhoods in the outskirts of the city, as well as in places on the coastline which fall under the auspices of the municipality of Cartagena, such as Cabo de Palos and La Manga del Mar Menor.
For instance, on the monument of the Nautical Station, located at the entrance to Cabo de Palos and La Manga, a luminous curtain will be installed on two of the three sides of the structure which will have very bright LED bars, creating a waterfall effect.
Meanwhile, in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento there will be decorations on the lampposts as well as three festive photo booths. In Castellini, there will be double arches with motifs of flat horizontal stars accompanied by rays. And the decorations on the Paseo Alfonso XIII will extend almost to the autovía in the Plaza de Alicante.
Overall, the City Council is investing more than half a million euros this Christmas to light up the municipality during the festive season.
When are the Christmas lights being turned on in Cartagena?
The big switch-on of the Christmas lights in Cartagena for 2023 will be on Tuesday December 5, and they will stay up until Sunday January 7, 2024, after the Spanish Día de los Reyes Magos celebrations.
Just before the switching on of the lights, the municipal ‘Belén’ Nativity Scene in the Plaza San Francisco will be opened at 6.30pm, with a a performance by the women’s a capella choir Sonrisas Harmony.
